What is Terrorism?

Since the 911 attack on the WTC, many Americans have worried about terrorism. Many people have used the word very broadly even to describe acts that don’t constitude to terrorism. At this point, we need to determine the accurate definition of terrorism. What is terrorism? In order to definite terrorism, we should set some criteria in our mind such as target, objective, motive and legitimacy.

Target is one of the special criteria to determine whether some attacks constitude to terror or not. Most terrorists target a general populace than a specific individual or group. For example, if the target of attack is military base and facilities, it may not constitude to terrorism. Objective is another. The main objective of terrorism is to provoke fear and insecurity and to cause public shock and outrage. Motive is also an important factor to determine terrorism. Behind of these acts, there are usually some complex political or religious goals. Legitimacy is the last one of them.

A weather pattern

These days, global weather patterns have changed rapidly compared to the last century and these changed weather patterns have caused many serious natural disasters worldwide. what are the main reasons of these changes?

The Greenhouse effect is one of the key factors of changing global weather patterns. Since the Industrial Revolution, many countries have industrialized and expended industrial zone. Some of these industries inevitably use air pollution- inducing fuels. In addition to this, most people in industrialized countries drive a car almost every day, emitting much carbon dioxide that is one of the main gases responsible for this effect. This causes the "greenhouse" to heat up, much like the inside of a car parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter. As a result, the temperature of earth is higher than before, a phenomenon called global warming. Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth’s temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns and a wide range of impacts on plants. These changes can also result in melting Arctic ice and rising sea levels. Finally, it causes changes of weather patterns throughout the world.

A Summary of “LUIGI, TONY, AND THE FAMILY”

This article, “LUIGI, TONY, AND THE FAMILY,” deals with how Italian-Americans have been portrayed in films and media. Ethnic characters and ethnic references have become common fare in television and Hollywood films. Especially Italian-Americans have become one of favorite ethnic groups.

In the media, Italian-Americans have been represented according to various stereotypes but most of them are nonintellectual and negative images. Among them, Mafia is Italian-Americans’ best stereotypes. In the 1930s, with television series like “The Untouchables” and movies like “The Godfather,” Italians was portrayed to gangsters. These two strong images led to the prototypes. As a matter of fact, not all Italians are gangsters and not all gangsters are Italians so it is kind of unfair description of them.

Media have strong tendency not to change but to keep the ethnical group’s stereotypes as they needs even some group’s stereotypes are far from the reality. For example in the last several decades many Italians have moved into the professional occupations. However, in 1990 alone five movies still described Italian-Americans as gangsters or similar role of guys. Because of media’s unilateral power, Italian-Americans’ stereotype is still same. Even though, many Italian-Americans want to escape from their negative images in the media.
